The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the Broadcasters Club Spring Luncheon with Daryl McIntyre and Carrie Doll. Carrie was going to ask Daryl questions about his long career as the evening news anchor at CFRN Television. It was initially hoped that it might be possible to schedule the regular Fall Luncheon. But, with the current restrictions on the number of people allowed to attend such events, this is not possible. In addition, a number of our regular attendees are members of one or more of the âhigher riskâ groups which the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Alberta recommends should avoid some or all such events.
The social interaction among long-time friends and colleagues has been a very important part of the Clubâs twice-a-year events for the past twenty years. During the pandemic, many of us have become familiar with Zoom or other internet platforms that allow us to interact on-line with friends and/or grandchildren. While such an event cannot take the place of the personal contact at the Clubâs usual luncheons, the Executive Committee thought that, until it is possible to think about getting together âin personâ, it might be a good idea to try a Zoom event. Daryl and Carrie have both confirmed that they are available to participate in a Broadcasters Club Fall Virtual Luncheon at 12:00 noon on Friday October 23rd.
People who would like to watch this Live Zoom event, can order a ticket for $15 from Eventbrite and they will receive a unique code and password that they can use to log in to the Zoom event by simply clicking on the link in their invitation e-mail. Although the ticket price for this event does not include lunch, charging for this Zoom event will make certain that, in a year when it is not possible to schedule a traditional luncheon, the Club will still be able to support our annual scholarship for a Broadcasting student at NAIT. There will be no need in this circumstance to log in with a video camera or microphone on your computer as participants will simply be watching the live event with Daryl and Carrie.

This Club Fall Virtual Luncheon will be slightly different than our regular luncheons as individuals will have to provide their own lunch to eat – while they watch what would normally be the âProgramâ portion of our regular luncheons. As soon as it is possible to schedule a luncheon event that most of our regular attenders would be able to attend, the Club intends to return to the original format and restore the important social interaction component.
We hope you will be able to join us for the first Club Zoom Event on October 23rd.
