A high flying cameraman whose career included two flights with the Snowbirds and several brushes with royalty, Al’s accomplishments covered the spectrum.
He started his broadcasting career as an operator and show host at CFRN-FM. Following that, he moved to CFRN-TV as cameraman and microwave truck operator. And then the fun began!
In addition to the thrill of the Snowbirds flights, Al was assigned to several Royal Tours which occasioned his meeting the Queen Mum, Princess Margaret, Prince Charles and the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway. In a particularly memorable adventure, he was on the search for the remnants of the Soviet nuclear satellite, and, as another exciting element in his photographic assignments, Al was the only cameraman in Nelson Skalbania’s plane when Wayne Gretzky joined the WHA. He was also the only cameraman who was allowed into The Fortess, the notorious drug house in downtown Edmonton.
These are treasured highlights of Al’s broadcasting career, all of which was with CFRN. He retired in 1998.
