Doug’s years in broadcasting have been exciting, to say the least! From the time he entered radio at CFRA/CFMO-FM, Ottawa in 1977, his career as an engineer has been dogged by incidents. At CFMO, the station snowmobile caught fire. Life was comparatively calm for Doug at CKAY in Duncan, B.C., where he combined tasks as engineer and evening announcer. Later, he filled the same positions at CKDA/CFMS in Victoria. However, in 1993, while Doug was Chief Engineer at CISN/CHQT, Edmonton, he faced a fire in CISN’s Caravan! In 1998, when he was Chief Engineer at CKRA/CIRK/CFCW, in Edmonton, CKRA’s air conditioner caught fire, and at CFCW’s transmitter site, yet another fire! All of this, plus a bomb scare when he was with CKXL/CHFM in Calgary. What an incendiary career!

Doug’s best memories are highlighted by coverage of the visit to Victoria of the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Steve Fonyo’s cross-Canada run in aid of cancer research.

Doug shared in the Gold Ribbon Award, presented by the C.A.B., for CISN Caravan. He also facilitated live broadcasts from Jamaica for four consecutive years. At time of writing, Doug is with Newcap Broadcasting as Chief Engineer for five stations: CIRK and CKRA Edmonton, CFCW and CAM-FM Camrose, and W1440 Wetaskiwin.

With yet another anticipated sixteen years to retirement, who knows what excitement lies ahead?
