PAUL, Jean Phyllis
1924 – 2011
On December 16, 2011, after a remarkable journey through life, Jean Phyllis Paul passed away at the of 87. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and soon to be great-great-grandmother.

She accomplished much in her life, enjoying her award winning writing talent as creative director of CHQT radio before retiring with her husband, Reg, so they could travel the world. Though she had the time of her life in many exotic places, her heart remained at home, with her family, who was her greatest joy.

Jean inspired in everyone a positive outlook and an appreciation for all the incredible possibilities that life can hold. Her faith in all our endeavours was unshakable.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Jo Ann (Gary), son Ralph (Kathy); son-in-law John Hanna; grandchildren Theresa (Aaron), Michael (Brenda), David (Geneva), Jordan, Ashley, Kailan, and Kara; great-grandchildren Christopher (Sarah), Bradley, Davis, Nicholas, Emily, Braiden, and Brielle and numerous relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Reg in 2004 and daughter Christy Hanna in 2008.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff in Unit 3G3 at the U of A Hospital, who treated her with kindness and affection.

A Service will be held for Jean on Wednesday, January 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Pleasantview United Church, 10672 – 62 Avenue. In lieu of flowers, it was Jean’s wish that donations be made to Pleasantview United Church.

Biography

In 1947, Jean walked into the CFRN studios in Edmonton’s old CPR Building to inquire if there was any kind of job in radio for a writer.

As a former news desk editor and occasional feature writer at the Calgary Albertan, she had never written a commercial, nor even seen one on paper! She was hired on spec and thus began a seventeen year stay at ‘RN as a continuity writer, pausing only long enough to have three babies.

Jean then did a short stint as part-time writer at CHED, followed by twenty years at CHQT, retiring in 1987 as Creative Director.

The highlight of Jean’s career was winning three Soundcraft ’74 awards in the Radio Bureau of Canada National Competition for commercials: Special Recognition, First Place, and one Honorable Mention. She also won two S.A.M. awards.

Jean feels equally attached to CFRN, because it was her first radio job, and to CHQT, because it was her last. She loved them both.
