Gerry McLaughlin

Obituary

In Loving Memory of Gerald Clarence McLaughlin of Edmonton
July 17, 1938 – March 4, 2011

It is with heavy hearts and a great deal of sadness that our family announces the passing of Gerald C. McLaughlin on March 4, 2011, at the age of 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife Roberta (Bobby) of 51 years; daughters, Cassandra, Samantha (Doug Smith), Danielle; son, Brinton (Jennifer); and grandchildren, Austin, Raquel, Connor and Jake.

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta to parents, Harold McLaughlin and Verna Marsden, he spent his earliest years in Picture Butte and Lethbridge. He attended St. Michael’s University Boys School in Victoria, B.C. Summers were spent at Camp Inuspi in Waterton Park as a camper then counselor.

High school years were spent in Calgary where he started his career in broadcasting, first at radio station CKXL, then CHCT-TV. He then moved to Edmotnon, working for CFRN-TV where he met his soon-to-be wife. Early married life was spent in Winnipeg at CJAY-TV, Toronto at CFTO-TV, and finally back to Edmonton, where he changed careers and became an accountant.

He was so proud of his children and was a devoted grandfather. They were his greatest delight. Each summer he took his children mountain climbing in Waterton where they explored almost every mountain. The rest of the summer was spent at his other favourite place – Pigeon Lake. Many hours were spent fishing, sailing, canoeing, telling stories around the fire and visiting with his neighbours. He was an avid reader, very social and loved conversations on any and all subjects, especially history. He loved to dress, especially in his tuxedo and looked forward to the annual Heritage Ball at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, dancing to the Lethbridge Big Band.

A special heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wiznura and the staff at the Links Clinic, whose caring and dedication to the whole family were exemplary. We would also like to recognize the palliative nursing staff at Alberta Health.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 Street, Edmonton. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or to a charity of your choice.
