Audrey Nelson

Obituary

NELSON, Audrey Elaine (nee Winkel)
March 16, 1935 – April 16, 2018

Legendary Danish knitter Audrey Nelson (“Granny”) passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018 due to complications from COPD. Her passing was sudden and unexpected, and her loved ones are deeply grateful that she did not suffer. She leaves behind, her daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Russ White, grandsons, Kyle (Tessa/Sebastian) and Bevan (Adriel), and lifelong friends, Betty, Joyce, Lou, and Don. Audrey was predeceased by her parents John and Hazel Winkel, and son Arthur McIntosh.

Audrey was born in Saskatoon before moving to Edmonton with her family. She worked for many years as a legal secretary, and then as an engineering secretary for CFRN. Audrey was also a dedicated volunteer at Victim’s Services with the Edmonton Police Service. A social butterfly always, Audrey enjoyed many hobbies such as square dancing, knitting, colouring, knitting, yoga (in her nimble years), swearing, and knitting. Audrey lived a very fulfilling life, and was quite an adventurer. She loved to travel, and did so frequently in her earlier years. She will always be remembered for her amazing sense of humour, which she maintained until her very last moments. Audrey was never shy about having a laugh, even at her own expense.

Her family would like to thank the incredible staff at Sherwood Care for welcoming Audrey for the short time she spent there. They’d also like to thank the nursing staff in the Emergency department and Palliative Care Unit at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital for their compassionate care during Audrey’s last days there. Audrey was loved very deeply, and will forever remain in our hearts.

A Private Family service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018.
